Blackout is a research
installation that explores hidden patterns in the human mind. Neuroaesthetics
is the combination of serious science, common phenomena, and a visual base for
artists throughout history. Hidden visual images are embedded in all humans and
can be enhanced by triggering the visual cortex in the human brain. Some
natural states such as different stages of sleep, looking at bright lights, and
deep meditation can provide long-lost images or reveal hidden colourful
patterns.
The installation features three
seats with 27 strobes placed in selected spots around a secluded space. The
audience is invited to sit down in the seats with their eyes closed while
wearing headphones that feature a music piece timed to the light for an enhanced
audio/visual experience. The strobes will make different timed patterns in a
3x9 matrix, which will activate quasi-hallucinatory imagery on the audience's
eyelids and create visuals for the music piece. Every imagery - colour or
graphic pattern - will be different for each audience member.
