Mysteries of the Sea
Fiskeri- og Søfartsmuseet
(2023)
The exhibition "Mysteries of the Sea" blends myth, reality, and
science to create a unique experience. The exhibition is dark and atmospheric,
and takes the audience on a journey below the waves of the sea into the deep
ocean, where old legends come to life.
To enhance the exhibition's mood, Dark Matters was invited to create
animations. The experience begins at the surface of the sea and takes visitors
deeper and deeper into the ocean. Visitors' first encounter with mythology is
swimming sea creatures that observe and circle them as they pass by their
territory. The creatures are animated over five screens in a staggered
position, creating the feeling that visitors are stepping into another realm.
Quotes and themes appear on the walls above the audience, which are
constantly broken by the eternal movement and unrest of waves. Throughout the
exhibition, visitors can explore and immerse themselves in deep-sea fish, giant
whale hearts, large octopuses, and real stories from explorers.
The giant octopuses steal the show as their monstrous tentacles suddenly
rise five meters high above the audience's heads at the deepest point in the
story.
