Echoes
at Kuben, Horsens
(2020)
An
echo is a sound that bounces back to the listener with a delay.
Echoes
is a video installation that aims to create similar 'echoes' in the visual
realm.
At
its core Echoes is a live video installation concept that involves a
surveillance camera, a computer with custom time displacement software, and a
projector.
The
idea is to displace time in a given space. We continuously record footage onto
a large hard disc, which is then displaced using custom video manipulation
software, and then projected onto a surface in the same space with a
significant delay.
In
early 2020, Echoes premiered in Horsens, Denmark, running for a month in Kuben,
a glass structure on a central town square in the city. We developed custom
software to make these time displacements, all distorting the timeline in
different ways. The system recorded all day and then replayed the displaced
footage every night, displaying a distorted echo of what happened in the same
location approximately 12 hours earlier. The installation ran for an entire
month independently.
Einstein
popularised the concept that time is a fourth dimension, and there is nothing
set in stone about 'now'. Even the 'past' and 'future' are not always well
defined. The malleability of space and time means that two events occurring far
apart might happen in one order from the perspective of one observer and in the
opposite order when viewed by another observer.
Echoes
explores these themes of time and space and our personal experience of them. It
also prompts reflection on our shared space and the interaction between people.
We believe it could inspire thoughts on themes such as memory, surveillance in
society, and the public vs. our private spaces.
