Butterflies...
at the Natural History Museum
(2019)
As a playfull and immersive introduction to the exhibition, Dark Matters created a 360˚ room with over 500 living butterflies covering the walls and engulfing the spectator. The digital butterflies were crafted using digital scans from the museums own collection and then we designed a custom "butterfly simulation system", that would allow us to art direct everything from the overall movements and behaviors of the large flock, down to the individual flutter of one individual butterfly. The whole thing was also setup so it was easy for us to move it to another room of a different size at a later point.
And finally our main collaborator in the realm of music Rasmus Zwicki, created a lovely timeless ambient soundtrack complimenting this whirling kaleidoscope of butterflies.
